But First, Socks KAL
A Beginner-Friendly Sock Knit-Along
Starts February 28
If you’ve ever wanted to knit socks but didn’t know where to begin — this is for you.
I’m hosting my very first Knit-Along, and I'd love for you to join!
But First, Socks.
This KAL is designed to walk you step-by-step through knitting a pair of DK weight socks using my But First, Socks pattern, which will be free through March 15.
Whether you’re a first-time sock knitter or just want to knit along with community, I'd love to have you!
What We’ll Be Knitting
We’ll be using:
- My But First, Socks pattern - grab the printable PDF
- DK weight yarn (100 grams will do! I used Brown Sheep Prairie Spun)
- Your preferred method for small circumference knitting (double point needles or magic loop)
These socks are designed to be approachable, comfortable, and confidence-building.
How This KAL Works
Starting February 28, I’ll be releasing the sock in sections through dedicated video tutorials:
🧦 Part 1: Cast On & Toe Box
We’ll begin with the cast on and shape the toe.
🧦 Part 2: The Foot
Knitting the foot to your desired length using a lovely rib pattern.
🧦 Part 3: Gusset & Heel Turn
Yes — the heel turn! We’ll walk through it slowly and clearly, using the Fleegle Heel method.
🧦 Part 4: Leg & Cuff
Finishing strong with the leg and cuff to complete your sock.
Each section will have its own video so you can knit at your own pace.
Who Is This For?
- First-time sock knitters
- Knitters intimidated by heels or toe up socks
- Anyone who wants structured guidance
- Anyone who wants to knit together in community
No experience with socks required.
How to Join
There are no rules and no pressure.
To participate:
- Download the free But First, Socks pattern.
- Gather your DK yarn and needles.
- Follow along with each video section.
- Share your progress on Instagram and use the tag #butfirstsocksKAL26 so I can share your work and cheer you on!
This is meant to be encouraging, flexible, and supportive.
Why DK Weight?
DK socks knit up faster than fingering weight socks, making them ideal for:
- First-time sock knitters
- Seeing progress quickly
- Practicing techniques without tiny stitches
They’re cozy, comfortable, and confidence-building.
Let’s Knit Socks Together
Knitting socks can feel like a milestone — and I’d love for you to experience that “I made these” moment.
We’ll go step by step.
We’ll celebrate progress.
And we’ll finish with a pair of socks you’re proud of.
Mark your calendar: February 28.
But first… socks. 🧦
